Yeah, I remember this spring you (Jason) intended to meet up with all of us for the beginning of the event, where as the rest of us just started near the cache we wanted to get first. I think it would be fun if we all started at the same location for this event.

Oh, and we should probably ask that when you hide a cache for the challenge that you let us know.
  • Please make a note in the cache listing that your cache is hidden for the Eco Cache Challenge.
  • Please email EcoCache@nwogeocachers.com with the name/type/CG# of your cache and if possible post a note in the NWOG forums too.

Okay, I had to rewrite the cache description twice today. I think it'll get approved tonight. What CacheDrone has been taking us to task on is this line in the guidelines (listed at the geocaching.com website.)

Quote
In addition, an event cache should not be set up for the sole purpose of drawing together cachers for an organized hunt of another cache or caches. Such group hunts are best organized using the forums or an email distribution list.

He knows what we're trying to do, but is constrained by the guidelines, so he sent a link to a Kingston event (much like ours) that was approved as a guide for our event cache listing. GC1G00Z That listing has a link to the "challenge" on their group's website.

Anyway, CacheDrone want's us to have the event, he's just trying to stick to the guidelines.

So it should be approved tonight. I've made this event a sub-board, so we can talk about different aspect of the event in different threads if we want. For example: cache listings, challenge rules, after the event discussions, etc.

Anyway, I'm going to try to get my first cache ready tonight. Woo hoo! Spread the word!

Well the listing made the approval, and Jim has made the Frist-to-write-note.   We hope you cachers get out and get involed with this one as it's the last chance before winter hits to really get together.

Time to get out before the spot your looking at is taken, I could see this happening a couple times for hides during this event as it happened to me in a event with a 50km limit.

And just wondering who's bring the coffee at noon?

When do we ask the GC.com reviewer to "release" our caches? Or should we just write a note in the description to the effect that if you want your find to count for Eco Cache Challenge points, you must not hunt for it before noon on Oct 18th?

It'd probably also be a good idea if you ask the reviewer to hold publishing your cache until a few days before the event to make sure they know that you intend to have the cache live on after the event.

We should also make a note in the description that the cache is part of the Eco Cache Challenge: Westfort (and if you're really keen, put the NWOG logo on the listing. ;) )

Okay, so I was looking at some maps over lunch, and I was thinking: there's some really neat (and historically important) areas across the railroad tracks in Westfort. So, I'd like to propose we extend the boundaries a bit. (At one point I thought: let's just use the Kam river as the east/south boundry, but all that Bowater area scared me a bit. ;))

So, take a look at this, and let me know what you think.

PS: I'm not suggesting we add this area because I have any specific cache ideas for the area, I was just thinking of opening it up a bit. I'd love someone else to figure out where the original Old Fort was (even if it was on this part of the Kam) and hide a tribute cache.

The original location of Old Fort William was here in the east end. There is a monument and plaque at the end of McLaughlin Street, Right by the CPRail car and locomotive repair facility. Prior to the shop being allowed to be built, archeologists  went through the area digging for artifacts. Once done, the shop was built.

1)  Just to let you know that I went with the initial selection to have the reviewer release the caches on October 16, 2008.  So that is the way mine hve been set up.

2)  Are we expanding the area limits?   I would rather that we stayed with the original because that was what I was working with when I setup my caches this past weekend.

Let us know - I will probably have to relocate one of my caches for the event.

Well, it's almost been a week with no response, so I think we're safe with going with just the original boundaries. Jim, even if the boundaries changed, my suggestion was just to expand them, so any cache you hid would already have been within them and therefore okay.

I know there are some streets in the south and east of Westfort that have some good bush on the side, and I personally don't mind if people utilize that space for this challenge. Jenn and I have managed to find four really awesome spots within, so we're good with our hides.

It's been fun dropping by Westfort a couple times this past week scouting out potential spots and wondering if some of the places we've seen will have caches showing up in a couple weeks.  :D

One of my caches is near one that Poohma set up.

I have to go to the Health Sciences Centre tomorrow, so I am going to look for another spot after my appointment.  Poohma managed to get their's submitted during the 5-6 hours after I had set mine up until I got home and logged the new caches, although I think I possibly got mine set up first.  I set up an additional 5 caches on the way home along highway 17.

Well I have to say that I'am happy with this "idea out there", you folks are doing great and I would like to see this event happen again for years to come as a "fall cache event", the spring SCC makes for a great "openner" and no better way to finsh things then a fall hunt.

Thanks to everyone and hope to see ya all at coffee and dinner for the Eco-CC.

Did we ever decide if we are meeting at one spot or just starting at our first cache?  I was just thinking about if we meet at one spot that it will be likely that a lot of people might pick the same route to go... not sure if that would be fun or difficult?

Well as far as things go and will stand we will meet at the same spot (in front of the Library), I would really like to see how this is gong to work.  Plus, who's going where first?, the closest or the farthest, well we'll see with the number of caches being placed I'm quite pleased for a good event.

Ah, I finally found where it said about the meeting place.. in the second page of the description for the event.. I thought I had read we were meeting together, but then I couldn't find it for awhile...well, it will be interesting to see what happens with a mass start!  I'm picturing a big mass of cachers trying to beat each other for a FTF on a close one :P  I wonder who is the fastest biker?? haha.

I suspect, though, I'm not certain, that one of Jenn's and my caches will be the closest to the starting location. Now, just so you know, that wasn't by design, we just found what we thought was a good spot and used it for one of our caches, and then realized the proximity to the start/end.

I suspect that our cache will be a first for someone and also the last for a number of people too. ;)
