NWOG Halloween Event
« on: September 03, 2010, 11:41:50 AM »
I am thinking of hosting a Halloween caching event... so check the batteries in your flashlight.

When I was looking for a location that hasn't been saturated, is well roaded and is not likely to have the cops called in, I came up with the Crown land within Fraleigh and Devon townships (near South Gillies).  The road system I was thinking of is Kotala Rd (Falling Snow Rd) off of Hwy 595.   It has a well maintain system of logging roads.  I can provide maps/ aerial photos to anyone interested in hiding/ hunting.

If you have other suggestions for a location that is suitable (or even closer), please post your ideas.

I figure we can hiding seasonal themed caches (and please note on the web page if the cache is child friendly or suitable for adults only).

We could meet early (4-4:30pm) for the event on Saturday October 30th (lets say the Stanley restaurant) and check out any costumes  (maybe even have a best costume prize). Then head out for an evening/night of great (and spooky) caching.

For safety reasons, I would request that anyone taking part bring two way radios (which we will set to the same channel) and/or  they cache with a buddy.

If I get a good response to the idea, I will proceed with the organizing the event....if the response is poor then there might only be a couple halloween caches hidden.

Sounds like fun.
I would have to check with BP76MRS first.
We're leaving on Holidays for a couple of weeks, so I wouldn't be able to confirm until the end of Sept.
Thanks,
BP76Mr

sAz, do you have another Marathon man?  That's the type of creative (and spooky) caches I'm hoping for.

After discussions at the Nipigon Fall Fishing Fest Event, it was suggested for the Halloween Event, that we could skip the dinner (at a restaurant) and just move to the caching event site.  If we were to use the Crown land in South Gillies, there is one road in which will help to keep track of who comes and goes.  A bonfire would be set up at the beginning that we could meet at (and return to).

I am still waiting some more positive response to this idea before I get started (as it will take some work to organize).

PLEASE SHOW YOUR INTEREST IN THE ABOVE POLL!!

Looking at other options that are closer: there is a new harvest road off of Barrie Dr (near the corner of Hwy 588) that opens up a large area of Crown land; it is only 25 minutes from Thunder Bay.  The road is in excellent shape but the road system is not as extensive as the Falling Snow area which could cause some crowding of caches.

Google maps doesn't show the new road so I  posted an aerial photo.  Approx. 7 km of well graveled road to work with here.

I'd like to say I'm in for something like this. I do love the idea afterall, but I can't reall commit to a date that far in advanced.

I guess you could say I would be a maybe.

I too cannot really commit as we will be on Holidays, and it is hunting season so we may not be around. I would hope to see more cachers with kids voice their opinion, on which they would prefer, close in town or out a bit and would they prefer a daytime event as opposed to an event in the evening. I think an evening event would add to the eeriness of all- hallows- eve. So we are also a maybe but leaning toward somehow someway we would try to make it. Is that an option ? I do like the idea of a fire, Ugg TommyBoy Like fire.
