2011 NWOG geocoin
« on: July 13, 2010, 08:23:07 PM »
If we have enough interest, we will develop a new NWOG geocoin (approximate cost $10/coin).  I believe we need to buy 100 to get it minted and 250 to get our own icon.  Since last year we did a pathtag; maybe it is time again for a geocoin.  Submit your ideas/ designs and let us know how may are interested.  I could take care of the order (with some assistance from sAz).  And I think we should call it the 2011 coin since it does take some time to pull together.

First I thought - what we are planning for a 2011 NWO Geocoin and we haven't even got the 2010 coin yet, then I read ChrisDom's log.

We (in the east in Pictou) would be interested in a few (probably the same as last time - 10)

Please stop using the 2010 NWOG geocoin topic as it is not likely to happen.  Any interest and ideas should be posted under this topic.

Ok, this may be an outrageous idea, but here goes...

Over the next few years (maybe four, maybe more) we mint four new NWOG coins. All four coins combine together in the end to make the NWOG logo. So, each coin is like one quarter of a big coin and shaped like a piece of pie. The back goes together to make the logo and the fronts each feature the year and the design to represent four things about geocaching in NWO: 1. the geocachers 2. the wilderness 3. the caches themselves 4. the technology in geocaching.

:o Crazy idea?

sounds really cool, you could even keep a log on this site to where each piece of the coin is and keep it constantly updated, and what if they all fit together like a puzzle? 4 pieces of the circle but connect together snug to make one coin

I like that idea (it will be hard to wait four years for the complete series).  So now all we need is designs for the front!

I wonder if the coin manufacturer would give us an icon (assuming we order under 250 of each) if we ordered all four coins from them?

Sounds interesting - count us in for this one.

But remember don't get overboard on the amount of geocoins.

The Manitoba Geocachers Association has only issued 2 geocoins - the last one was to celebrate their 5th anniversary - I bought a couple.

If the coin geared towards being an Ontario Coin, and not just a North Western Ontario coin, you could sell a lot more and bring down the over all cost.

Just a thought.

As a side note, we'd carry the coins in our online store to assist with sales of it.

I think that our group really likes our own NWOG coins. And we had no problem pre-selling all of our 2009 coins. That said, we should remember to consider our options when it comes to getting those not within NWOG pre-buying this time around.

I could imagine having a coin released maybe twice a year? Or how about (as a way to drastically reduce our costs) we design and sell a mass-appeal puzzle coin set?

Just happened to come across something similar to what Darren has proposed for the NWOG 2011 geocoin.  Good idea I think, and the link below illustrates that successful idea.

Kinda reminds me of the 12 Days of Cachemas.

Well hunter-5's link has been removed..

But anywho...  put us down for a couple sets.

Just out of curiosity, I've seen other geocaching organizations do a limited run of gold finish coins and a large run of standard silver or what-have-you, is there any chance we might see something like that?

So is anything going on regarding getting the 2011 geocoins ordered?

No information since last summer

We will still take 10 of them

Yeah, we did do that for the NWOG coin. There are 10 (?) "gold" ones out there and the rest are "silver". There didn't seem to be an overwhelming response to the coin idea last year. Maybe if there is a renewed interest we could do another one.

We would be up for a few, a couple gold and a couple of the other lets say. 2011 is well underway already, if there is enough interest in it, would love to see a coin this year.  Who does the design for these coins?  Is that set of 4 over 4 years thing still the goal, or are we looking to something different?

I think that shroom did the design for the last one but anyone can do up a design.  Not so sure how many artists we have amongst us.  There are various considerations about relieif, colours, shape..etc...but someone else here may be able to talk to that.
