Police / Security Contact while out geocaching
« on: January 24, 2010, 09:22:32 PM »
OK folks, how many of you have been "checked" out by the police or security while out geocaching:

At the moment I can think of 4 times for myself and pnutbeagle:

1) Summer 2009 - west of Kenora - I was in my car looking at my GPS after trying to find a cache when an OPP officer stopped by to see if I was all right - All I said was that I was taking a break from driving.

2) June 2008 - In Kansas while looking for a cache in a metal structure near a burnt out truck stop.  Security came over to check us out saying that we should not be in that lot - We explained what we were doing and showed him the cache and then were on are way.

3) July 2009 - While in Winnipeg I was geocaching in a treed area near an entrance to a shopping centre.  Security came by to see what I was doing.  I took him back to the cache location to show him the cache container and a note that was in the cache container from the head of security at the mall.  The note saw that the cache was checked out by security and the cache on geocaching.com and they came to the conclusion that the cache was no problem and that they had replaced it.  The security guy that stopped me, remembered seeing the note on their bulletin board.  I left to continue geocaching in another area.

4) Apr 20, 2007 - Pnutbeagle and I had just got back from finding "Out in Left Field" when the police came by.  We showed them what we were doing and talked about geocaching and them went on our way.

There may have been 1 or 2 more.  I will add them if I remember them.

OK folks, your turn.  Lets hear about your contacts - good or bad.

Paper is a biodegradable, renewable, sustainable product made from trees. Growing and harvesting trees provides jobs for millions of men and women, and working forests are good for the environment, providing clean air, clean water, wildlife habitat & carbon credits. Please remember to recycle after.

A couple of years ago, I was taking a course at the OPP Headquarters in Orillia.  There is a cache placed quite close to the helicopter landing pad and hangar.  One evening, one of the other participants in the course, with the caching name of
Tequila, and I went looking for it.  As we were walking away from the cache, we were approached by OPP Security, wondering what we were doing there.  When we showed him our security passes, and explained what we were doing, he was OK with it.  Apparently, there had been several times when cachers had gone too close to the helicopers, or were acting in a suspixious manner, and were stopped by Security.  It was a little unnerving when we were first approached by the (armed) guard.
That's the only time I have had a run-in with security (while caching).

A close friend of mine is a member of our local constabulary and told me that recently he approached some "suspicious individuals" while he was on patrol near the Hwy 11/17 Neebing River bridge.  Apparently they were skulking around in the trees near the bridge when he "pounced" or walked up to them really.  He realized they were those "geo-people" and told them he new what they were up to as a buddy of his was involved in it.  Then he Tazed them  ;D - uh, no, I added that last bit.  :-[

Geez, can't even remember its  g-e-o-c-a-c-h-i-n-g.  Anyways, I think they were near "Riverview".  So if it was you, you're lucky because he's got a mean temper and a hair trigger - uh no, once again just ignore me  ;D he's a great guy.  But there you go, a brief Police Contact from the other perspective (with some of my creative licence to spice it up a bit).
