"SnowShoe for the Caches" event - January 23, 2010
« on: January 06, 2010, 10:22:28 PM »
I am planning for an event called "Snowshoe for the Caches".  This is not "Drive for the Cash" as in "Ice Road Truckers"

This event to be held in the afternoon before the MGG Coffee Klatch 2 Event and will involve snowshoeing the length of Three Finger Lake to find the 2 caches that have never been found or even attempted since they were published on February 8, 2008.  After this event is finished we will head to Nays Lunch for the MGG Coffee Klatch 2 Event.

I will be submitting the event later tonight when the geocaching website come back on line.  I need to do a couple of changes and submit the event but I am getting errors assessing the geocaching.com website at this time.

The event has been submitted - watch for it - GC22QT3

Snowshoe for the Caches

There will be plenty of time to complete this event before the "MGG Coffee Klatch 2 Event"

Marathon Geocachers Group's Coffee Klatch 2

Lets go find those 2 unfound caches on Three Finger Lake north of Marathon.

Everyone can claim 2 FTF's and 2 events on the same day

See you there

The latest news on the event is that CacheDrone would not publish the event until all references to people gathering to hunt for caches during the event are removed.  I have re-written the event so that there is no reference for searching for caches and have resubmitted the listing

Any details for the event will be published here, after the event listing is published.

I will keep you posted

The event has been published - This isn't "Dash for the Cash", it is Snowshoe for the Caches"

EVENT DETAILS:

There are 2 unfound caches on Three Finger Lake, north of Marathon Ontario.  It has been almost 2 years since these caches were set out during a Winter Scout Camp and no one has attempted to find these caches since they were published.  I did a maintenance check in February 2009 and the caches were still in good shape and above the snow level.  It is time to get a group together to go find these caches.  Since both these caches have never been found, everyone in the “Snowshoe to the Caches” event will be able to claim the FTF on the 2 caches.

The caches are:

GC198WG – Three Finger Lake Cache
GC198XA – 1st Marathon Cubs/Scouts Three Finger Lake Cache

We will meet at the parking area near the Hill Top Café (see listed waypoint), then snowshoe to the posted coordinates which is the Scout Camp Cabin.  There will be a fire on in the cabin so everyone can warm up before the “Snowshoe to the Caches”.  It is about a 650 metre walk to the posted coordinates from the parking area.

Once we are at the posted coordinates for the event, we will stoke the fire in the cabin, discuss the 2 caches we need to find and plan our route to the 2 unfound caches.  Anyone at this point who doesn’t want to continue to the unfound caches can remain at the cabin to keep the fire going and prepare hot chocolate for everyone returning form the “Snowshoe to the Caches”.

Snowshoes will be required to go for these caches.  I have several pairs available from the Marathon Scouts for anyone who does not have any.  But if you have your own personal snowshoes, bring them with you. Remember to dress warmly for the hike.

Then we will hike, using snowshoes when needed, first to the closest unfound cache (GC198WG) (~600m hike from the posted coordinates), find that cache and then continue to the next unfound cache at the north end of the lake (GC198XA) (~1500 metres from the posted coordinates, ~900 metres north of the 1st cache).  Once we get to the lake surface, we will probably find that the snow will be fairly hard packed that we will not need the snowshoes until we get near the 2 cache locations.

The best time to go find these caches is during the winter when the lake is frozen.  In fact, I believe that although both caches are winter friendly, hanging in trees, one of them is not assessable in the summer by boat. Cache is at the North end of the lake.  You can get to probably 100 metres from the cache, but then there is only impassable swamp to the cache location (which is on dry land). I am not even sure if you can bushwhack to the cache.  The second cache on the same lake can be reached by boat, but the winter is the best time to find it.  Major bushwhacking for nearly a kilometre would be required if going by land (probably 2 km to the furthest one).  There are no trails to the cache locations.

Schedule:

Event Date: Saturday, January 23, 2010
Event Time: 12:45 PM
Event Details (Times are flexible):
– 12:45 PM – Meeting place: Hill Top Café (Parking Coordinates)
– 1:00 PM – Hike to the posted coordinates
– 1:15 PM – start on hike to posted coordinates (Scout Camp)
– 1:30 PM – Find the two unfound caches and return to the Scout Camp by 3:30
– 3:30 PM – Have Hot Chocolate to warm-up and wrap-up event
– 3:45 PM – Hike back out to parking lot
– 4:30 PM – Head to Neys Lunch for MGG Coffee Klatch 2 Event and dinner

Other caches available on the way from the parking area to the posted coordinates for the event are:

GC12RQ – MR&GC – easy find in winter
GCJM94 – 1st Marathon Cub Pack Cache – will require digging through the snow

Please log your "Will Attend" on the event listing, if you are planning to “Snowshoe to the Caches” event and how many will attend, so that we will not leave anybody behind at the parking coordinates.  Please also indicate if you will need snowshoes, so I will bring out enough.  (I have about 6 -7 pairs available). If you have your own, please bring them.

See you at the event.

Only 3 days until the event.  It looks like it will be a great day - sunny and relatively mild.  With the warm weather we had in Marathon last weekend and the snow melting, it looks like we may not need snowshoes for the lake, just when we get into the bush areas.

Please remember to post if you will be attending so that we will not leave anyone behind in the snow dust we will stir up going to the lake.

We all had a great time snowshoeing to the event location and then up the lake to find the 2 unfound caches on Three Finger Lake.  Please see our logs under the event listing.

Out for the event was myself. pnutbeagle, Statsman595, Lileddyca and The Monster Beagles.

We missed having the Thunder Bay crew at the event.

It was a great day - mild temperatures (1°C), cloudy but no wind.
