There's not to many geocachers in the Red Lake area but I would like to change that. I would even like to encourage cachers from out of the area to make a day trip to Red Lake for some interesting caching. I do have plans to publish more caches in the area at interesting spots, I'll get to that in a bit but for now I'll fill you in on some of the caches already placed from Vermilion Bay to Red Lake.
From VB to Ear Falls there are 8 caches and approximately 100 Km of travel. The 8 caches break up the trip rather well and there is some nice spots and good hides. Now from Ear Falls to Red Lake there is some great caches, maybe I'm biased because I live in the area but I do love the history up here. In the 75 Km to Red Lake from Ear Falls there are 7 caches for a total to this point of 15 caches. None of these caches are mine and I have found them all, a great NorWest adventure guaranteed. There are 5 caches within the area of Red Lake, one is temporarily disabled but I have contacted the owner, it looks as if they've moved to Manitoba so I offered to check it out for them. One of these caches is mine and we're up to a total of 20 caches. The other 2 caches are mine, one is approximately 40 Km north of Red Lake which seems out of the way but it is a unique area and the other cache is placed on Red Lake so you need a boat but again a unique area. So there is a total of 22 caches from VB to RL and area.
When we placed the cache on the lake we found another interesting area and talked to the person in charge of the project and he was thrilled about the idea and wanted us to put a cache at that location and encouraged us to place them at other similar locations so we plan on doing that next year. Also the town is planning to build 28 Km of walking trails to connect all the small towns that make up the Red Lake area, I am planning on getting in touch with the Walking Trails Committee to discuss geocaching on the trails once they are completed.
I plan on setting out more caches in the area in the meantime, I have three already made up just haven't hid them yet. I'll probably get one out this year and place the other two next year. Hopefully I can get in touch with the few cachers in the area and we can make this a great place to come and experience through geocaching.
I have no affiliation to these places I'm just listing them to help fellow cachers that are interested in heading to the area. Just past Ear Falls there is
Pakwash Provincial Park, a nice campground that I have been to many times. Not to far past Pakwash is another campground but for the life of me I can't find any info on it, not a number, email anything. There is a
cache placed there with permission but I can't seem to find any other info on it. About 20 minutes south of Red Lake is another place, it is a
tourist camp but they have some campsites with full hookup. I have camped there before and it was a great experience. Right on the highway inbetween Red Lake and Balmertown is a nice
campground, I have been there many times. For the adventurous there is a campground way to the north, 45 Km or so, they don't have a website but here is the
info.
