Winter event?
« on: October 04, 2009, 10:34:23 PM »
I don't know if this has been covered already in one of the previous threads, but I thought I'd toss this idea out there.  What do you all think about a winter caching event?  It would be great to increase the # of winter accessible caches in the area.

I think that'd be a lot of fun. It seems like there's not as much caching going on in the winter months. I'm planning on doing a winter game/series (like GeoMonopoly) and would welcome the discussion on how to hide caches that aren't immediately obvious in the snow when someone finds it.

That said, if a cache is hidden (winter friendly,) there's nothing to stop cachers from running all around the area to disguise their tracks. After all, our GPSrs are going to bring us all to the same general area (give or take 5m.) So, I wonder if a well hidden winter cache would really be "too easy" after the FTF.

Would it not make sense to create a series of winter puzzle caches?  It might give a cacher something to do on a cold winter night.  It might slow some of the quick cachers from getting the FTFs.

I think winter caching lends itself more to urban settings or high traffic areas (ie centennial park or boulevard). That would reduce peoples chances of using footprints to find the cache. The only issue with doing another urban event is that it would greatly reduce the areas we could use for the FCC. I'm not sure I would want to do two urban caching events a year.

I like your idea of doing a mini-event again Darren (somethign like Geomonopoly). Maybe if we had a few people willing to set a couple different small games we would have enough to do over the winter and that way everyone would have some new caches available to them...

I would be willing to explore some ideas and see if I can come up with something too.

Hey shroom, have you thought about geo-clue?  The return of Marathon man could be considered similar.

Hey, GeoClue! Neat idea. I love a good mystery, so maybe that would work. Though, I don't necessarily want to tie myself to a board game theme. I think people enjoyed a new cache or two every Friday for a couple months with GeoMonopoly, so I'm going to do something similar to that for my GeoGame.

I imagine the Seal's thought for a winter event would be more of challenge type thing. We could even do something out at one of the conservation areas one afternoon, have a big fire or something. That could be fun.

Speaking of big fires, I recall some talk of a big fire somewhere this fall...  :D
