Just realized that's a day after my Birthday. I'll have to cut back on the beer the night before, maybe only 100 beers or so. I'll be the corpse in the ditch, with the party hat and noise maker, don't toss me out. We will be there. Just let us know the location

I don't have free time, but I'd make time to H's birthday bash! Just don't invite Wandering Man, he's a beer snob. :)

Oh yeah, we'll do our best to be at the CITO, DNF permitting. :)

The event post is up:  CITO.
I drove the 11/17 today and there are alot of Adopt-A-Highway signs close to Thunder Bay, we may end up closer to Pass Lake.  I have a meeting at the MTO tomorrow to discuss a location.

That's still not too far for anyone from Thunder Bay, and not too far for the Nipigon Cachers if they want to help out. Lets hope some eastern location pans out.

We still don't have a location on the highway picked.   On Tuesday, the MTO will help me scout out a location.  They assure me that we will be set for Saturday.

I will be picking up safety vest on Friday so please indicate if you plan to attend ???.
Superior Safety Inc. has supplied us with 20 pairs of gloves (10 large, 10 medium) :).  EcoSuperior has also donated a prize for the event :).

The Adopt-A-Highway sign may not be posted until spring.

Since work along the highway right-of-way requires the volunteers to be 12 years of age or older, I plan to organize an all ages CITO event this spring (possibly with the Lakehead Conservation Authority).

CAUTION:  THIS MESSAGE DISCUSSES SUBJECT THAT MAY OFFENSIVE TO CERTAIN PEOPLE.

A word of caution regarding this activity, especially with respect to any children that would be helping out in the event.

Quite a few years ago the 1st Marathon Scouts were involved with the "Adopt-A-Highway" program (before I got involved in Scout at Marathon),  They decided, after they were finding current things in the ditches, to get out of this activity.  The objects were mainly plastic containers, bottles, windshield antifreeze containers, etc, that were full or partly full of urine that people would just use and then throw out of their windows.

The next time you travel down the highway take a look, you will be surprised to see how many of these containers you will see along the highway.

Anyway - kind of gross - this is one of offensive things you may see when cleaning up a highway.

Jim

Prizes?  Yes, there will be Prizes!!!  ;D     Names will be drawn at the end of the event.
Greenmantle Forest Inc., Eco Superior and KBM sales have generously donated some prizes for volunteers.

Weather forecast has improved for Saturday; so if you haven't logged with your plan to attend; get to it.

Okay, I just finished up a site visit with the MTO.
NWOG have officially adopted 2 kilometers of 11/17 between Pearl and Superior Shores Road (approx 48km east of the Terry Fox Monument).

If you live east of our section of 11/17 or if you can't make it to the Landmark Inn by 11:50 am (where I hope we can carpool), head up the highway to join us.  The event will end by 4:00pm.

The event page has been updated to include the start and finish of our adopted section.  There is a snowplow turn around at one end and a road at the other end; if you show up early, please use these locations for parking.

Note: Lakehead University will be will be cleaning their section (they are bringing 50 volunteers) on Satuday, so if you see a bus, thats not us.

??? Don't let today's weather affect your decision to CITO tomorrow.  The weather will improve and it should be a great afternoon :).

I hope we can get a good turn out for NWOG 1st CITO event.
Did I mention there will be prizes?

MTO gave most of their safety vests to Lakehead University; so I wanted to post a thank you to Haveman Brothers Reforestation for lending us extra vests for this event.

:) Thank you to everyone who turned out for NWOG's 1st CITO :)
It was a successful day with 27 bags of garbage (plus tires and other large scrap) being gathered.   Our job next year should be easier!!

(Photos have been posted on this site and the CITO cache page for any who are interested.)
