NWOG geocoin 2010

We should start tossing around ideas for our next geocoin. First, are the NWOG's ready for another geocoin (would you buy them?) Second, does anyone have a new design idea (within budget). These things take time and if we want a new coin by the spring challenge, lets get working on it.

I'm definitely in to purchase a few this year. I figured I should get in at the start this time rather than attempting to mooch some after the fact
As for ideas, Shroom and I were talking the other day and I suggested that we should look at other landmarks of the northwest to go along with the theme started last year with the Giant. Maybe something like Kakabeka Falls, the Stone Indian from Ouimet Canyon or even something maybe from one of the other NW Ontario communities.
I'm going to attempt to dust off the ol' Photoshop skills and see if I can't come up with some working concepts.

For sure! I'd love to have a new coin for 2010!
When Chris and I were talking at the pubnight last week, we were talking about the "investor" strategy that JuicePig suggested (a little late) last year. I think it's worth considering. We could raise a little more capital to get the coins made, then sell them abroad to recoup our money with the initial investors making a little profit for their investment dollars.
One problem I think we had last year was having an icon of the area that wasn't too generic. How many times have moose coins been done, I wonder? And while the Sleeping Giant was a little Thunder Bay centric, it was something that has probably never been on a coin before. So, let's start thinking "theme" for this year's coin.
I'll throw this out too... It's SUPER hard to make a coin look good with colour, in my opinion. I was SUPER happy with the classy no-colour coins we made this year.

I totally agree about the no colour thing with this years coin. I think it looks totally amazing in all metallic. But I think we should be open to colour depending on who we go with for a maker this year. We may find that the colour really adds if we do use landsharkz instead of oak coins.
As for the shares idea, I'm not totally sure what you mean by it. Can you explain the process a little more?

Yes, I'd like some more info on that as well. If you get the coins I'd sure love to buy a few.

What about pathtags instead? You get a lot more for cheaper...but they don't travel...that is the only thing...the are more for trading.
See

Pathtags are interesting and definately cheaper (design and 1st 50 tags for $99 US, $0.90/tag after that). Enamel colour but not trackable. Lets see what the interest is in trackable coins as these are more of like geo-swag.

I would prefer a geocoin over a pathtag. As for color, I was very impressed with the look of the metallic one we have, and I don't think the extra expense is really worth it, providing we have a strong image for the coin. I am game for another 10.

I think I might have an idea for the geocoin this year. Before I spent to much time sketching it up, I figured I'd run it by the NWOG to see if there is an interest.
"Paddle To the Sea"
; I don't think a geocoin has been created for this theme. It is a book and a classic
NFB film
. Nipigon has just opened a theme park.
I am not much of an artist so if anyone else wants to sketch up this theme, feel free.

Sorry Chris had to edit your links
That's an interesting concept. I remember seeing the film many years ago. It would be interesting to see what type of design we could create from this theme.
As you and Darren both know I've been working on a design theme too. My theme would showcase truly "northern" caches... (hmm sounds like the thread I just started has ulterior motives
)

BASK: The grand opening of Paddle to the Sea Park in Nipigon is planned for May 2010.
I understand that Wandering Man and shroomAzoom are working on another style of NWOG geocoin but if I continue with a Paddle to the Sea geocoin, do you think Nipigon Businesses would be interested in purchasing trackable geocoins to sell for souvenirs?
I believe a run of 100 coins is required, and I could find buyers for 20-30 coins.
I am still working on a design but would like to use the NWOG logo on the reverse side.
Let me know if there is an interest.

Chris, are you thinking of doing this coin as a separate order from the 2010 NWOG coin? Does that mean we would have two coins being developed this year?
I'm not against the idea at all (actually I'm sure I would buy some of each
), just trying to clarify what we are looking at here.

I'm just thinking that this coin may fit well with Nipigon's grand opening for the Paddle to the Sea park. Many businesses were sponsors of the Nipigon Fall Fishing Geocaching event this fall. They may have an interest in a Geocoin and why not have NWOG develop it?
In short .. yes, why not two coins?

I just watched Paddle to the Sea again the other night. Probably haven't seen it since I was in Beavers or something. I think it would be really neat to incorporate that into our 2010 coin. I wonder if we might be spreading ourselves a bit thin doing two coins? Maybe we should concentrate on doing one really well? I'm not particularly attached to one idea or another yet, but there is a lot of great possibilities going on here.
