Location For Fall Cache Challenge
« on: August 24, 2009, 12:07:18 PM »
Take a look at the attached picture of the three areas proposed for this year's Fall Cache Challenge. From north to south we've got:

Current River Area
Centered around Boulevard Lake and covering a lot of residential, parkland and shoreline areas. This area has variety going for it and lots of parkland. However, some of the parkland has a number of caches already and it can be a bit hilly. It is also a little larger than Westfort from last year, which is a pro and a con.

University and Hospital Area
Centered around Lakehead Univerity, this area has parkland, wilderness, residential and institutional areas. Again, a lot of variety, but you'll have to choose your cache areas wisely to not overlap with existing caches. The terrain is slightly more level. This is the smallest area of the three to choose from.

Fort William Area
Including Confederation College and Chappels Park, this area has lots of residential area, the Neebing and McIntyre rivers, parks and some commercial areas. The terrain is the flattest of the three areas and is of a moderate size. However, it is mostly residential, which may prove challenging to hide caches in.

Consider the options, and vote for your choice. Once an area is decided upon, the exact boundaries will be published, a start/end/event location will be chosen and we can get prepared! In the mean time, start thinking of original cache containers to hide for this fall's challenge!

Are we supposed to just vote right here? If so I vote Current River. Tons of unused park land, trails and waterfront to plan in... plus its nice and close for me  ;D

If you're looking where to vote, you'll notice at the start of this thread (even before my first post) there is a voting area with the three choices. Select your choice and submit your vote to the poll. After you vote, you'll see what the results are so far. The poll will be open until the end of the week.

So, it's looking like even before the poll closes that Current River is winning the area for the Fall Cache Challenge. I took some time tonight to put together an event listing for the event, thinking that it'll take a couple days to get published. Maybe sometime late Sunday... after the poll closes. Nope, published tonight! :)

So, as you can see, I was thinking of having our dinner at the Curling Club. We can make reservations and only now as I'm typing this do I realize that the Fall Cache Challenge is turning into a Chinese food meal. Ha!

Anyway, RSVP's at the event cache listing are appreciated. I'll make reservations based on those numbers and will hold seats for those who RSVP. :) No, we'll make room for everyone who shows up, RSVP or not. But RSVP if you can! Thanks!

I'll try to have a map of the boundaries and a list of rules out either this weekend or on Monday or Tuesday so you can start thinking about hides.

Good choice for a meeting and dinner location.  Excellent Chinese food.

My son's girlfriend's mother manages the restaurant there.

Well here's the map for the Fall Cache Challenge. As you're thinking of hides for next month (well, almost next month) keep these boundaries in mind. The Expressway bounding the top, Balsam St down the left side, River St across the bottom (and extended out into the harbour, Hodder from the top down the left to Strathcona Ave out to the city limits (where the road goes over the tracks) and then extended out into the lake from there.

I think the potentially most contentious area to define will be that last little bit described above; the area just inside Bare Point. Without having really staked this area out, please use common sense and be sure your hides (if any) out there are fun hides, instead of using the area for nastiness. :)

There should be a lot of areas for wilderness hides and urban hides. Have fun thinking about where you might want to hide, and I'll do my best to get the hide rules out in the next day or so.

I think that is a challenge - maybe a multi or a puzzle cache linking the two

Today, I was talking to the manager (and owner) (my son's girlfriend's mother) of the restaurant at the Port Arthur Curling Club, asking if anyone had talked to her about the event wrap-up.  She said that noone had contacted them.

She did say that there was curling going on that weekend but should be able to handle the number I thought would be there was  20-25.

So you may want to contact the restaurant as soon as you can.  They have been warned.
