4th of July in Grand Marais
« on: June 12, 2008, 12:25:42 AM »
Well it's about time that someone at least tries to get something together,  So how about a firework show the Friday night and a day of caching on the Saturday (July 4-5).   For those that don't know Grand Marais is a small town on the shore of lake Superior in MN, and there 4th of July fireworks for years was a better show then Thunder Bay could pull off.. mind you it's been a few years but I'm sure it's still quite the show.  There is only about 18 active caches within 25 miles of the town but this is some nice area to see, and plus you can't visit without a stop for pizza at Swen and Ole's.

My plan is to head down the Friday night for the firework show and spend the night in the campground and spend the Saturday hunting and enjoying one of those pizzas to finish off the day.  We'll most likely be staying til the Sunday....

Now this town will have a few thousand more people then it's 1,800 full time residents this weekend so booking ahead is a must in the campground and the hotels ( that is if there is still anything left), so if theres any interst in this weekend we better get things together.  I'll try to check on rooms and campsites in the next few days and post my findings.

Sounds like a good idea. There's one cache up on the "hill" behind Grand Marais that we did a month ago that was really worth it. Just make sure you get the correct coordinates from the logs.

Unfortunately, Jenn and I are going to be in Vermillion Bay (or Kenora, or Dryden) that weekend, so we can't join you. Maybe later in the summer, or early fall we can organize a group cache trip somewhere else though?

I'm surprised that given the location of Grand Marais and it's large tourist base, that there are so few caches in the area. We did a few on the way back from Duluth, but for a Town as popular as Grand Marais is tourist wise, there are not a whole lot in the area. Good outing though, we will be passing through a few days latter than your planned outing, so unfortunatley will not be able to go. The fireworks are something to see, and for anyone that has not been there for the 4th celebrations, it is quite the show on the lakefront, and well worth the trip.
If you don't like the way I drive....Stay off the sidewalk.

Animals taste good.

Learn how to use a compass. Gps is fine until it does not work, and it sucks to have to eat your friends to live.

Planning on heading to Grand Marais for the fourth weekend if we can find a room.
If you're a man, you don't need to stop and ask directions. When you own a GPS, you're never lost; you just haven't arrived there yet.

Well I checked into some info, there seems to be some room openings, a few of the hotels in Grand Marais are owned by the same company.   Grand Marais Hotel Company at 1-200-247-6020, looks like theres still rooms at, (Super 8. King, $115),(Super 8. double queen, $125),(Spruceglen. double twin $99 Smoking),(Aspen. double queen, $159) and there is more.   These like many in the area require a two night stay.  There is the campground that I have to call tomorrow hoping to get my site, Primitive waterfront $32, primitive $27, water + elec. $34, call them at 1-800-998-0959.  For any more information about rooms or anything Grand Marais they have a nice website at www.grandmarais.com
