GeoMonopoly Q&A
«
on:
June 17, 2009, 12:46:23 PM »
I hope to have covered all the bases with my post on GeoMonopoly, but if I've missed anything, or you'd like to ask me a question about it, fire away. I've started a new thread for the Q&A because I'm linking directly to the description/rules topic from the cache page and wanted to keep that separate from the discussion.
So, I've got all the caches (except for the ones that are already out) in my sunroom. The locations are scouted, the listings are pending and I'm ready to make the rest of the drops in the next week and a bit. I have never tried a cache series this big before, so I'm excited to see how it goes. And to think, I originally had planned for over 30 caches!)

Whats monopoly?
Really!?
Try
Wikipedia
, if you must.
Well, I've got 11 of the 15 caches hidden and submitted. Four more to go (and a little bit of wire to bend.) I must say, I feel like I've been very productive in the geocache front this week. I hope you'll all enjoy the caches. Ten of them are regular sized caches (so this won't be a bunch of micros,) and only two of the micros will be hidden in trees. (I don't think I'm giving much away with that.) All of the caches are going to be hidden within the bounds of the Expressway, so they'll all be "in the city" and a few of them will be quite urban, and others will be forest trails and such. As I mentioned the first pair of caches come out in about two weeks.
One question I thought of today that you might as has to do with transferring properties. Why would you want to and how do you do it?
You'll notice on the sample property deeds that you get paid a base rent $$$ when you own the cache and other people find it. You may have also noticed that "With 2 in (neighbourhood)" and "With 3 in (neighbourhood)" the rent $$$ goes up. That means that if you "own" two or three properties in the same neighbourhood, you can earn a lot more rent $$$ per visitor. So if you've got two properties in different neighbourhoods it's to your advantage to trade one of your properties with someone so that you can have multiple properties in the same neighbourhood.
So, how do you trade? Well, there's no real provision for trading. But you can transfer "ownership" of one of your properties to another player by sending me an email telling me who you want to give what property to. I'll make that transfer on the next Friday,
after
you get paid rent $$$ for it. It would be a good idea to stipulate in your transfer email if you are involved in a trade and only want the transfer to go through if a certain other property is transferred to you. If you're using email, best CC: the person you are working the trade out with.
Anyway, here's looking forward to a fun summer of Monopoly.

Well, the first batch of the GeoMonopoly caches have been approved by Cache Minder. I've just got one more to hide (hopefully this afternoon, I built it yesterday.) Thanks to those who have expressed their interest in playing the game. I'm looking forward to calculating the rent!

I haven't posted here in a bit because I didn't want to flood the forums with my excitement. But, seeing as the first GeoMonopoly caches come out later this week, I guess I can talk a little bit about it.
All the caches have been hidden and all the caches have been approved (this happened early last week.) I'm happy to say that of the 15 GeoMonopoly caches hidden, 10 of them are full sized caches, only 5 are micros. And none of the micros are of the "needle-in-a-haystack" style.
On Friday 3rd, the first two property caches will be published, one in the Westfort neighbourhood, one in the Fort William neighbourhood. (And by neingbourhood, I mean game neighbourhoods which co-responds roughly to actual neigbourhoods.) To be entered into the draw for "ownership" of the properties (and to be eligible to start collecting rent $$$,) you've got to find the cache before the end of Thursday 9th.
Remember, even if you can't find a propery cache in that first week, you can still be a winner of GeoMonopoly by finding ALL the GeoMonopoly caches before September 4th. And every GeoMonopoly cache you find, earns you $$$ (in most cases, you earn more $$$ for finding that the owner receives in rent $$$.) So, find all those caches to win!
I'll start up a standings/rankings page in the next couple days to let you know how the game is progressing and to give you hints as to which properties are coming up for release! Have fun!
PS: I know it's fun to compete. I love it. But, this game is sort of set up like BINGO. You'll need some luck to rake in the most $$$, but you still have to pay attention and find those caches. Most of all, I hope people have fun!

I guess there is no hope of owning any properties for the out of town folks, unless we just happen to be in town the week the caches are released

Not quite. You have to find the cache during the first week it is out to be able to "own" a cache. That means that anytime you are in Thunder Bay between now and the end of August, make sure you find the GeoMonopoly caches published the previous Friday and you will be in the draw to be an owner.
Also, I'll be weighting (ever so slightly) the odds of the draw in favour of those who have NOT yet found a cache. So, the more caches you "own" the less likely (ever so slightly) you'll win the draw, but it could still happen. Also, note that you earn more $$$ by finding a cache compared to $$$ you earn in rent. So someone who does find a lot of the caches (even if they don't own them,) by the end of the game may have more $$$ than someone else who "owns" a property but hasn't found many.
So, in fact, there is lots of hope for out-of-towners or vacationers or people who work all day and can't run out like some other people to be FTF (I'm looking at you H+K
) have a great chance of owning caches and to do well in the game! I tried to work it out that way because I know lots of people will be taking vacation over the summer.
Have fun!

Thanks for the explanation
I think I discovered H-K's "fault" (that isn't the right word, I want to use, but I can't think of the proper phase) that gives them trouble finding certain caches. LOL

Ah Ha, now I see why you are putting them out on Friday. Because we work. Son of a gun boyko, you rascal. Trying to slow us down? That's nasty, But we got the FTF anyway on the first two. LOL
And yes Jim we have many faults, but math kills us every time. Kathy's sister is a retired U of Ottawa math professor. When we have trouble we get our son sniper to figure it out. I see math I i wilt like a wet paper bag. Bad brain.
On edit we retrieved the geocoin from Fredrica, in case the site is down for a while.
