NWOG 2010 Geocoin/Tags Race
« on: May 08, 2010, 09:09:27 AM »
Well it appears that we have an interest in doing another coin race this year. So consider this the official announcement to kick it off! We will be holding start-up event at the dinner for the Spring Cache Challenge. For those who wish to be part of the race, but will not be attending the dinner, fear not. Simply send a PM to either ChrisDom, or myself and we will work something out. The start of the race will be June 1, 2010. We do have a small entrance fee for the race. $5 gets you in, with all proceeds going towards prizes (Yay for prizes!!).

SUBMIT TRACKING NUMBERS HERE!

We are going to keep it simple and run the same basic rules of the last race:

This race is open only to geocoins (that’s why its called a coin race!). Forget that, coins and tags are both cool.
A maximum of 2 coins per participant will be permitted.
All coins must be activated, and have 0 (zero) distance before the start of the race.
All coins must be trackable on the geocaching.com website.
All participating coins must be present at the start-up event, to record the official tracking number of the coin. The owner of the coin does not have to be present. (See homepage for how to submit coin tracking numbers!)
At the start-up event, an official tag will be issued to each coin, identifying it as a participant in the race, which is to be included with the coin in its travels. official tags are available through download on the website, or can be picked up from ChrisDom, ShroomAzoom, or myself when you deliver the entry fee.
The coins are to be placed in any cache in Ontario.
Distance traveled will be determined from that starting cache. (If you can't make it to the event, email me, I'll get you a tag to attach to your coin. Don't start racing before you get your tag.)
The race will conclude at 11:59pm on April 30, 2011.  At that time, the categories will be checked, and winners declared.

    Travelling Rules...

Participating cachers are not permitted to move any of the coins, (including their own, once placed in a cache), or interfere with their progress in any way.
Movement of a coin by a relative, friend, or business associate is prohibited.
Coins are to be moved from cache to cache in the usual manner, with one cacher placing a coin in a cache, and another cacher retrieving it and moving it along.
Coins are to be physically moved by hand from one cache to another.  Movement by UPS, FedEx, snail mail, etc, is prohibited.

    Winning...

The coin with the most miles traveled.
The coin with the most caches visited.
The coin that is furthest from it's starting cache.
One coin could possibly win all three categories, or there might be three winners of the three categories. Any prize (probably a gift certificate) will be divided by the winning categories.

This race is run on the Honor System, and relies on the integrity of the individual cacher to follow the rules.

If you plan to take part in this years race then add your name to this thread and we will make sure we don’t miss you on the list. Good luck!

Great. Went and purchased 4 travel bug tags for this as we did not want to loose more coins to theft. Rulz.... We're out.

An adjustment has been made to allow tags. We wouldn't want to exclude anyone on a technicality. ;)

Just make sure the traveler is trackable at geocaching.com.

Now you see, there ya go, a little bit of compromise and now we are happy campers instead of sad and grumpy members who really dislike rulz that continually change. We wanted to give LANDSHARKZ the buisness because of their support for Chris's events, did not want another coin lost to coin collectors, so figured it was like last year and bought travel bug tags instead.  Sometimes you can be nice Wandering Man  ;D ;) LOL  Must be something to do with it being your Birthday. Thanks for bending the rulz. Unlike that Shroom fella.  ;) ;) ;)

Woah woah nellie!!

Pretend that you did not have a trackable coin or a trackable tag available to you that has 0 km on it, or one that you want give up to the public. (oh wait...that's me)

How would someone that wanted to enter this contest do it?

I think that more than a weeks notice should be given!  Of course that is my opinion, and since others are running the contest, they can make the rules (right Shroom?? H-K says that you know all about rules :-) ).  I think that perhaps a June 1 start date would give all those of us that do not have extra tags or coins a chance to order some (or one).  I would be willing to place the order for up to 5 TB tags.  I am looking that these Canadian flag ones...http://shop.geoswag.com/shopsite_sc/store/html/tbitems.html

Let me know if anyone else wants some...

If more bending of rulZ are not given, we bought a 4 pack of tags Dave. We need 2, you are welcome to the other 2 for co$t.  I know I ain't the sharpest pin in the cushion, I have a hard time understanding what someone interprets as simple yet we find difficult, (frustrating why is my brain broken ?) and we do miss so much that is posted here, but this one we spotted, and thought is was like last year so bought travel bug tags. Insert buzzer noise here...... NOPE...... wrong. But now all is good. Communication and discussion of rulZ be it a challenge or an event like a traveler race would help, so every MEMBER is on the same page. ;D

We'd be interested in up to 5 TB tags as well. After picking up our coins from Shroom and reading about the rampant coin thievery here and on groundspeak forums, I think I'll just keep my coins and use tags. Great Cdn tags Mechman, but do you think these are any less attractive from theft than just plain tags?

Theft is theft.  Not so sure that any particular tag is more or less prone to being taken!!!

I'll purchase 10 of them, but I can not promise that they will be here in less then a week....so I can not guarantee that they will be here before the race starts!  (Unless the rules are bent again!)

Just a heads up, if your caught CITOing at the SCC you may win a one of several TBs or geocoin!!!!  For more details, see the CITO Challenge cache in the event.  The race doesn't begin until June 1 and I think there would be room for late enteries (if your coin/TB doesn't show up on time).

Has an event been created yet?  I havn't seen one pop up.  We will be driving back from Minni on June 1, so I may need to give my 2 tags to someone for presentation at the starting event!  I will have two travel bugs for the race.  Does the actual bug need to be at the event, or just the tag?

Canada Flag TB tags showed up today

I've got a few left if anyone wants them.  They are $5.25 a piece, after shipping and taxes.
